NAS or DAS?

A NAS shares storage over your network and runs its own software. A DAS enclosure attaches to a computer over USB; that computer handles applications and file sharing.

Empty bays are not storage

Every model here is diskless. Count the drives you need, check the manufacturer’s compatibility list and budget for a separate backup. RAID affects usable capacity and does not replace that backup.
