A two-bay NAS build for family photos
Start with the size of your photo library and how quickly it grows. This example uses a two-bay NAS with two equal 4TB drives in a mirror. It provides about 4TB before formatting and filesystem overhead, not 8TB of usable space.

Who this build fits
A household that wants a shared photo library and automatic copies from computers or phones, and can fit its library plus near-term growth inside 4TB. The F2-425 provides two SATA bays, an Intel x86 processor and 2.5GbE. You can use a gigabit network, but faster transfers require a suitable client, switch and cabling.
Why these parts
The ST4000VN006 is an exact 4TB IronWolf CMR SATA model. TerraMaster lists it as recommended for the F2-425 in its drive compatibility table, checked September 13, 2026. Two identical capacities make the mirror’s size straightforward. This is a specification-based starting point; we have not benchmarked this combination.
Protect the photos, not just the disks
RAID 1 maintains a second copy inside the same box and can tolerate one drive failure. It does not protect against accidental deletion, theft, fire or a compromised account. Keep a separate backup, ideally with an off-site copy, enable versioning where supported and test restoring a folder. Budget for that backup destination separately.
Set up before moving your only copy
Install the drives and supported software updates, create individual user accounts, then configure the mirror and photo backup. Test uploads, permissions and a restore using a small sample. Keep the originals until you have verified both the NAS copy and the independent backup. Check current mobile app support for your phones.
When to choose a different build
If you already have several terabytes of media, compare larger compatible drives or a four-bay NAS before buying. Two bays limit future expansion options, and both mirrored drives may need replacing to grow the pool. An external USB drive may be enough if only one computer needs a local backup.
