What to Check Before Buying a 16TB External Hard Drive

Desktop vs portable

3.5-inch desktop externals need wall power but cost much less per TB. 2.5-inch portables run off USB but top out around 5TB.

What drive is inside

Externals often contain SMR or white-label drives. If you plan to shuck the drive for a NAS, research which model is inside the enclosure first.

Interface

USB 3.0 (5 Gbps) saturates any hard drive, so USB-C vs USB-A is about convenience, not speed. Thunderbolt adds nothing for a single HDD.

Backup software bundled

Ignore it in the price comparison - free tools (or your OS) do the same job.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 16TB external drive good for backups?
Yes - external HDDs remain the cheapest way to back up in bulk. Follow the 3-2-1 rule: 16TB of originals should be matched by at least one local backup drive and one offsite or cloud copy.
Can I shuck a 16TB external drive and use it in a NAS?
Often yes, and shucked drives are historically 20-40% cheaper per TB than bare NAS drives. Caveats: warranty handling varies by region and vendor, some enclosures use SMR drives, and some drives need a 3.3V pin mod to power up in older PSUs.
Desktop or portable 16TB external drive - which should I buy?
If it stays on a desk, buy the desktop (3.5-inch) version - meaningfully cheaper per TB. Buy portable only if you genuinely carry it around; you pay a premium for the smaller drive inside.
