What to Check Before Buying a 4TB NVMe SSD

PCIe generation

Gen 3 (~3.5 GB/s) is plenty for most users. Gen 4 (~7 GB/s) is the sweet spot for new builds. Gen 5 commands a premium few workloads justify.

DRAM cache

DRAM-less drives are cheaper but slow down on large transfers and heavy multitasking. Fine for a games drive, avoid for a primary OS drive.

TBW endurance

Terabytes Written rating indicates lifespan. 600 TBW per 1TB of capacity is a healthy number for consumer use.

Form factor and keying

Almost all consumer NVMe is M.2 2280. Check your motherboard or laptop supports the length and that the slot is NVMe, not SATA-only.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 4TB NVMe SSD worth it over SATA?
For an OS/boot drive or anything involving large file transfers, yes - NVMe is 6-12x faster than SATA and the per-TB price gap has narrowed to nearly zero at most capacities. SATA only makes sense when your machine has no M.2 slot.
What should a 4TB NVMe SSD cost right now?
The live table above shows the current cheapest options per TB. Prices swing with NAND market cycles, so a drive that looks expensive this month may drop 15-20% next quarter - if you are not in a hurry, price history matters.
Do I need a heatsink for a 4TB NVMe drive?
Gen 3 drives generally run fine bare. Gen 4 and Gen 5 drives can thermal-throttle under sustained load, so use the motherboard's M.2 heatsink or a cheap aftermarket one. For PS5 use, a heatsink is required.
